Improve New Hire Retention
You put in A LOT of work in your hiring process and here is a quick tip to make sure your new hire stays!
I’m Lindsay and I’m an HR Consultant that helps make managing people a little easier. When you’re starting anything new, you' are usually a little bit apprehensive and looking for confirmation to continue on… or to run! The same thing applies to starting out at a position or a new company. As managers, we influence the crucial moments of the employee’s experience which starts during the hiring process and continues through the onboarding process.
Still not sure how this might look in your organization? Let me paint a picture for you…
Imagine you showed up for a surgery and no one had reached out beforehand to let you know what you should do before you come in or who to ask for when you arrive. They don’t tell you how long the surgery is going to be or how long you will be in the hospital for afterward. You’re not sure what the recovery time is, if you will need support or physiotherapy, or what medications you may need afterward. They just said, “We’re so happy to have your appointment booked! Please show up at 8:00am.”
This is how your new hire may be feeling when they are approaching for their first day with your company. While this may seem like routine or the normal day-to-day for you, this is all new to them so help walk them through what they can expect when they start with you!
Here are some quick tips to help reduce uncertainty for your new employee:
Share the agenda for the first day
Let them know who they will be meeting with
Let them know what type of work they will be doing
Let them know who to ask for when they arrive
These simple points will help your new hire feel welcome and reduce their anxiety leading up to their first day with your organization which will avoid their instinct to run!
