How to Stay Calm & Not Escalate Conflict

Your hands are sweating, your heart is racing, your stomach is turning… you’re dreading having that conversation because you know you two disagree.  I’m going to share a secret with you…

…the reality is: no one likes to be in conflict, some have just learned how to navigate it better than others.  When you follow these tips, you will be able to navigate tough conversations and disagreements with expertise!  I’m going to share 5 ways to stay calm and not escalate conflict—avoid a disagreement from turning into a high conflict conversation by remembering to:

  • Focus on the problem, not the person

  • Keep to the facts

  • Use “I” statements instead of “you” statements

  • Avoid saying “always” or “never”

  • Listen to understand, not to respond

While you may not be able to control where the conversation goes, you are in responsible for the way you show up which includes your words, tone, and energy.  Make yourself proud!
